A leading beverage manufacturer and distributor was in the process of migrating their Siebel® 7.7 application to Siebel 7.8. Faced with the challenges of upgrading the application and a major release scheduled to immediately follow the upgrade, the client knew they needed a way of creating a fully automated regression library that could be built on the newly upgraded Siebel 7.8 application and then modified for use during the next major Siebel 7.8 release. FocusFrame was called in to assist the client with defining automation best practices ranging from business process documentation and scripting utilizing Business Process Testing components, to managing their test library and training their manual testers in automation best practices.

Challenge
The client’s Siebel application had never been functionally verified using automation. The QA team tested all functionality using over twenty contractors manually testing the application but only performing unit tests and not exercising the application end-to-end as a real user would. FocusFrame engaged the client by meeting with the stake holders and explaining how the BTO vision of maximizing IT investments with a concentration on quality can help their organization achieve optimum results at a reduced cost. Convinced that the BTO vision was in line with their corporate goals, the client engaged FocusFrame to build a comprehensive regression test suite and to train their resources in functional verification best practices.

Action
FocusFrame began by analyzing the existing unit test scripts that were being used by the manual testers. The FocusFrame team had to work with the client to rewrite the test cases so they were targeted for automation. All assumptions about the business processes were removed from the scripts and each step was explicitly stated. The unit tests were combined in order to produce real-world, end-to-end business processes.

With FocusFrame’s BPT Accelerator for Siebel® systems installed, the team only had to update certain pre-built components in order to comply with the client’s customized Siebel instance. With the complete suite of business components defined, FocusFrame was able to begin building end-to-end business process scripts within the first week. Because of the speed of development that can be achieved by using the BPT Accelerators, the test team was able to deliver additional BPT scripts above and beyond the client’s expectations.

Since the client’s Siebel test team was not trained in using automation, FocusFrame conducted both one-on-one and group training sessions. The client was trained in FocusFrame’s best practice APT™ (Approach, People, Technology) methodology to prepare them for building upon the libraries the team created and to teach them how to properly document business processes for automation.

  APT in Action
  Approach:
  • Automation strategy for implementing the BPT Accelerator for Siebel
  • Customized the BPT components to the client’s unique Siebel environment

  People:
  • Experts in Business Process Testing
  • Experts in Functional Validation

  Technology:
  • HP's QuickTest Professional™, Quality Center™, Business Process Testing™
  • FocusFrame’s BPT Accelerator for Siebel

Results
Since using the BPT Accelerator for Siebel systems enabled the test team to quickly create end-to-end business process tests, the team was able to expand upon the initial project’s scope and create business components for every screen and view combination represented in the client’s system. The team was also able to deliver an additional 40% more business process test scripts than what had originally been in scope. In the end, the estimated annual cost savings is over $660,000 dollars and will decrease the amount of time needed for test execution by 50% per release. The number of manual testers can be decreased by a significant amount without resulting in a loss of test coverage. Since employing automation best practices, the client was able to begin training their QA organization to prevent wasted time in correcting improperly documented business processes and to better track and resolve defects through the Quality Center defect tracking system.
